The Decatur Bike Derby will have fun events for all ages, from bike decorating to racing. Be sure to arrive early to sign in, get a participant number, and go through a quick bike/helmet safety check before proceeding to activities.

NO PARKING ALLOWED on the block surrounding F.AVE (including Fifth Avenue, Gordon Street, Fourth Avenue, and Oakview Road), so plan to roll on over if at all possible.

Registration required to participate in the following biking events.

Decatur Bike Derby t-shirts are guaranteed only for registrations received on or before September 19. After that, t-shirts will be included for registrations only while supplies last.
Decatur Dash (4-8 years)
This short, straight race will start and finish on Fifth Avenue, starting near Oakview Road and ending near Gordon Street. Riders will be grouped and started by age, and they are welcome to have training wheels and parents walking beside them, but no trailer-bikes will be permitted. Parents should feel free to help children get started and encourage them along the way. The crowd will certainly be cheering! This will be a fun event for kids who are not yet comfortable biking greater distances. All participants will receive a small prize.
Bike-a-Palooza Obstacle Course (8-18 yrs)
Bicycle South experts are designing a fun obstacle course for riders of all ages. A shorter course will be available for younger riders, with more challenging elements added for more experienced ones. The course will be set up on F.AVE's play field.
Tour de FAVE (7-18 yrs)
This is the Derby's signature race event, taking place on the 4/10-mile city block surrounding F.AVE. Riders start on Fifth Avenue, turn right onto Gordon Street, turn right onto Fourth Avenue, turn right onto Oakview Road, and turn right toward the finish line on Fifth Avenue.  Riders will be divided for grade-level races, and volunteers will try to balance factors that may affect competitiveness, including bike-size and gear-capacity. Winners of each race will receive a small prize. F.AVE students will be racing for local bragging rights. Boy- and girl-champions will be determined for F.AVE's 4th grade and 5th grade.
Bike Decorating
All participants who register for bike decorating will be given fun decorating materials to liven up their tricycles, big wheels, or bicycles. Volunteers will have supplies and be on hand to help, but parents should plan to assist their children with putting on the decorations.

Bike Safety Checks
All riders must wear a properly-fitting bike helmet, and they must pass a safety check before participating in any event.  Every bike and helmet will be checked for basic safety and proper fit.  After passing a safety check, riders will be given a “pass” to go to events. If a bike or helmet fails the safety check, volunteers will help riders determine whether a quick fix can solve the problem. If not, there will be a limited number of 20” bikes and helmets available to borrow for events.

The following activities do not require registration.
